Biographical information
After Ukraine declared independence in 1991, he became actively involved in the development of independent media and public activities. He founded the NGO Institute of City Development, which created the first development strategy for Lviv.
He is one of the founders of the Lux radio station. It is now a media holding company that includes a television channel, several radio stations, and news websites.
In 2004, he founded the Samopomich civil association. Two years later, he won the Lviv mayoral election for the first time. Under his leadership, the city became a tourist and cultural center of Ukraine.
Lviv hosts dozens of international festivals and conferences, including Leopolis Jazz Fest, Lviv IT Arena, Lviv Media Forum, and others.
In 2013, he founded the political party Samopomich Union, and in 2015, they won the elections to the Verkhovna Rada, but Sadovyy declined a deputy mandate in favor of working in Lviv.
In 2019, he decided to run for president of Ukraine, but later withdrew in favor of another candidate representing the united democratic forces.
After another victory in the 2020 mayoral elections, he is actively involved in developing a new medical strategy for Lviv.
In 2022, after russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Andriy Sadovyy, together with international and Ukrainian partners, initiated the launch of a large-scale medical rehabilitation center called UNBROKEN. This unique institution provides comprehensive qualified medical care to adults and children affected by the war, including modern prosthetics.
Among the priorities in A. Sadovyy’s activities during the war are helping the military and veterans, expanding international cooperation, supporting social and cultural projects, and developing education.
In 2025, Lviv was awarded the status of European Youth Capital, which contributed to the development of youth policy and practical steps to support active young people. The city became a platform for the exchange of experience, creativity, dialogue, and international initiatives.
